Here is a back study I did. This is a digital painting done in Photoshop and is more of a study of color. Comments and critiques very welcome!

Really cool in your brushstrokes! Looks exceptionally nice at that thumbnail read too,. I dig your work! : )

Thanks!

This is looking good James! I think the anatomy is reading well. I feel like you could push some softer edges primarily in the form shadows, and use a hierarchy of edges to guide your viewer's eye to where you'd like them to focus on.

Hey James, Love the hue variety. I find it difficult to understand some of the forms of the muscles. I think working on the workflow of starting with gesture, developing the simple forms and carving out some secondary forms etc can really help. An exercise which i found really helpful for this, is to do quick sketches. Starting at 2 mins and extending the time the more detail you would like the piece to go. In terms of the back muscles and bones. Proko has a great course on anatomy which can clear up the anatomy roadmap of the back. Just small indications of the plane transitions and bones can do wonders. Hope this helps

Thanks for the information. This study was purely a color study. I was not even focusing on muscles and forms. I just wanted to experiment with color.

Not much of a critique other than the forearm is a little out of proportion. I really like what you did here in capturing the form!

I realllly love the colours you've used in the back! I find the black contour line, particularly on the left side very distracting though and it draws my eyes away from all the interesting skin tones

Why are there so many overly skilled people on this website?! By the way, I love those colours you put into the skin tones, really makes it look alive! Also, the almost limited-looking brushwork is 10/10. This just a personal preference so that take it seriously at all but i wish that right arm's edges would fade more into the background to make it feel more lost giving it a tiny bit more variety. Overall lovely post!

Thanks for the comments! I was not going for a finished drawing so I was not too concerned about having a good fade. It was just a study of the back and colors.

I like the colour variations! The muscles are pretty well defined as well!
