Animal Drawings (Figure Drawing Course)
2yr

@michaelbrixx
Hello! I’m on the animals lesson! These are some of my first drawings! I already know I need to work on my lines that wrap around my cylinders, it’s really hard to get them right though! This lesson is really difficult, but practice is required to get better! Feedback is appreciated. My proportions are quite off too, I apologize!

Hi @michaelbrixx, nice studies! My favorite is the bear; I think you really managed to capture the form with those crosscontours.
I'll do my best to help you further:
- I would be interesting to see you fill a page with boxes, and a page of cylinders, drawn in different angles and from imagination. I have a feeling you would benefit from working on those. The more intuitively you know the building blocks, the more effortlessly you'll be able to build a creature with them. Feel free to tag me (@Jesper Axelsson ) when you post them.
- One thing I found really tricky in this exercise, was to draw the joints. The connections between the major forms felt so complex, and it had to be done with the gesture maintained. It has helped me to leave out the joints at the start, and just place out the major forms. You might appreciate following this process:
1. draw the gesture (as if it was a river flowing through the body (look at how Glenn Vilppu does it at 21:00 in this Drawing Demo by Glenn Vilppu ) )
2. then stack the forms on top.
If drawing an animal feels too complex, you could just practice stacking forms on top of a random gesture line.
- One thing I've found helpful when drawing form, is to try to feel the form. Similar to how you try to feel the pose in a gesture drawing, as if you were striking it yourself. I like to imagine touching the forms, just to help my brain realize that what I'm trying to draw has dimension. Also try to feel what's on the non visible side of the subject, and draw through (lightly) as if the subject was made out of glass. Drawing through is a great way to keep your constructions in check.
Hope this helps :) Keep up the good work!
Thank you! I’ll start my drawing with a gesture and put the forms on top! I will come with a new set of drawings soon! I appreciate the feedback!
