Asked for help
I don't normally post online, but thought I'd share. I hadn't done any drawing or art since I was a kid, until I had a child of my own and drew with her. During lockdown I thought I'd try some drawing again. This is a picture I recently found in a sketchbook from the start of that lockdown, with a re-do of it I've recently done following the portrait course. I was surprised by the difference. The recent one is obviously better, although I can see some things that clearly still need work. I'd love to keep improving working on drawings and art, but not sure where go next. @Jesper Axelsson, I've seen your work, it's great and you give well thought out, considered advise to people. I was hoping you had ideas? I was thinking Figure Drawing course but I want to get this stuff right too. Cheers, Mick

Hi @mick38, thanks for reaching out. Nice drawings! Isn't it exciting to see improvements like that :) There is a lot of great art education online. I'll try to give some guidance based on my experience, but I'm sure there are other paths you could follow that would work just as fine: I started with the Figure Drawing Fundamentals course and I strongly recommend it. It will teach you some very important fundamentals, mainly gesture and form, that will help you in drawing any subject matter. "I was thinking Figure Drawing course but I want to get this stuff right too." The Portrait Drawing Fundamentals gives you some good tips and processes to follow when drawing the portrait, but doesn't go into depth about some important fundamentals. Taking the figure drawing course won't be a detour for your portrait drawing! It will give you the necessary skills to improve your portraits :) The figure drawing course has it's main focus on gesture and form, two very important fundamentals, but is more brief on topics like shading, materials and composition, so you might want to combine it with other courses to get a broader foundation. I haven't taken it myself but New Masters Academy's "Beginner's Guide to Drawing" https://www.nma.art/courses/drawing-guide-for-beginners/ looks like a really nice course. To sum up, my suggestion is that you: - Take the figure drawing course - And complement it with "Beginner's Guide to Drawing" to broaden the foundation or complement with information, where you found the figure drawing course to be too brief. Hope this helps and if you have any further questions, let me know :) Good luck!
