Before and after Stan’s instructions and demo.

Awesome improvements! I like that you’re putting in the effort to amend after you watch the demonstration.

Hello everyone! Here are my attempts at the pear assignment. In my first one, I was really surprised at how simplifying the values made the image look pretty good, especially when I look at the picture from far away or a small thumbnail! However, I felt it looked really flat. Also on the first attempt, I felt like I had no process, and I kept trying to create the values relative to each other and spent a lot of time darkening other areas after making another too dark. So on the 2nd attempt I tried to lay out the planar structure and shade along the curving flat planes. I also changed my approach to work on the values in this order, which helped me feel less chaotic. 1) Light shadow 2) Dark shadow 3) Highlight 4) Light halftone 5) Dark halftone To create the dark shadow and dark halftone, I would shade on top of my light halftone, which made it easier to get a darker value by simply layering more graphite on the lighter values.

EDIT: Did a third attempt now that the demo's up. I focused a bit more on cleaning up the lines and filling the shaded areas more consistently. Also tried out shading the background and I really like it!

I am not very happy with it. My pear looks more like a potato. I got lost in the details again.

Dear @Anna S, you might be being too hard on yourself, which might negatively affect your motivation and therefore affect your progress (I know this from experience, if you hate all your drawings you start to associate drawing with just negative emotions, meaning you will draw less. The "spiral of death" Stan mentioned). Given the simplifications I think the value ranges worked very well here and this definitely looks like a pear. I see what you mean regarding getting lost in the details specifically in the shadows here, you might have been able to simplify even more with the shadow values.

I think I went in on the detail waaaaaaaaayyyy too early. Need to SIMPLIFY shadow shapes much more. Was a good exercise learning to stick with just using five (four) values. Had fun.

Definitely love that you posted your whole process, from beginning to end. The values seem really clear. The only thing is I'm not sure where the lighter shadow is on the pear itself (if it's there at all), though I can see it on the outer ring of the cast shadow.

Shading with mechanical pencils wasn't the most time efficient idea I ever had.
Kyle Maharlika
I'm definitely a fan of clean lines and structure, this looks very aesthetically pleasing!
