I've been following this first version of the curriculum for 14 months now. I've bent it and shaped it here and there to help myself achieve my specific goals. I've written weekly blog posts at https://litmusik.medium.com where I track all the drawing that I've done and progress that I've made. I've found that the structure is just what I need to keep me motivated. I didn't realize there was a second version. I'll have to take a look.

Hello. I've been studying drawing for 15 months, averaging about 30 hours per week. I am currently using half my study time to do master studies and learn new concepts, and half my time to produce original art. I am interested in becoming a comic book penciler. I've included the first three pages of my original comic. Thank you for your time!
@litmusik
What was your training regimen like when you started taking art seriously (e.g., hours per week, types of exercises, goals).

Any advice for transitioning from traditional materials to digital? It's difficult to get used to not being able to see my hand while I draw.

Hello. I've been practicing drawing fundamentals for 1 year and my goal is to work as a comic artist and eventually write and illustrate my own graphic novels. This year my goal is to make the jump from copying images, to drawing from imagination. All the images I'm posting here are studies of other artists because my drawings from imagination turn out so poorly.

Hi Litmuski, That is the trick. Most people with some practice can copy and image but "copying" an image is a good training method is not the same thing as creating art. You'll need to take some classes that cover the foundations of character invention. So you can start with a simple gesture or even stick like figure and pose your character and then build up from there using reference. I think you've copied enough, put that away for awhile and not write some short stories with characters and then create some layouts and start making your own graphic novel now. That will give you the fuel to learn "on the job" when something doesn't look good take an online class on the subject then move on. Having a "live" project to work on is one of the best ways to improve and to have something to show when you're done.

These all look great. What do you think is the problem when you try to create from your imagination? It seems like you have a good grasp of light and form. Do you struggle with anatomy? You should show some original art so that other artists can see it and react. It might be scary, but I am sure you would benefit from it.

Hi @litmusik ! It seems you are working hard! I am not particularly sure what you will need help with. I know it is an old song, but mileage will absolutely get you there. And masterstudies are GREAT way of getting better fast! I absolutely think you are on the right path. And for the drawing from imagination part, that will come! Plus that will need practive too! Great work! Don't give up : )
@litmusik
I've been studying drawing fundamentals seriously for 1 year and my goal is to do comic art (penciling). What percentage of my study time would you recommend using to draw from imagination vs. copying comic art (master studies) vs. practicing fundamentals? How did you spend your practice time during your formative years?
