I found myself discussing the age old debate around how and when an artist can use reference with some other artists and we came to a question none of us had considered. I figured this community would be able to provide a more in-depth discussion or at least a variety of opinion. The Central Question: Can an artist profit off an original piece that was a result of a Draw This in Your Style challenge? I know established brands/universes will sometimes license out characters and thus everyone can profit to varying degrees in that model - hopefully at least. But does asking the general public to draw one’s character in their own style forfeit the right to claim intellectual property later on? I’m leaning towards yes, but I would love other perspectives. Let me know what you think!

I’m working on a story revolving around two brothers visiting their uncle. The older brother, Alex, is cautious and kind while the younger, Georgie, is wild and naive. Which head design do you think fits these personalities best?
Miguel Arguelles
This is for heads only, but it's pretty useful for that. Results get iffier as the angles get more and more extreme, though. https://x6ud.github.io/#/

Woah, super cool tool though, definitely bookmarking this one!

Have a Google of is my cat fat (I know from personal experience they give lots of diagrams of cats from the top down haha...)

Lols I never would have guessed, this is excellent!

Really nice sketches! I think you can group the shadow shapes on the hair to make it more interesting. Love the details and the pencilwork!
Terence Rabuzzi
I’d second this idea, but I want to say great job on the shadows for the guy with the hat and hood. I really like the mood of that one!

Anyone know repositories of cat references from various angles? Struggling to get the top down view right in the attached.

Wow, definitely some impressive variety you have here! I’m curious, do you plan on continuing on the path of new environments or will you be focusing in on one or two types that you enjoy the most?
Rubén Frutos
Thanks, Terence! I'll continue doing new environments. I don't do these as a prior work for a more detailed painting, they are just warmups.

This is great! I would love to chime in and help out. Please take this all with a grain of salt as I'm new to this platform and way of giving off feedback. Took the time to try to scrappily mock-up some suggestions as well, see the attachment (somehow I wish you could embedded images in this chat thing). Feedback: • I feel it could use a bit more contrast as some of the mid-tone areas (ie: dark green-ish with grays) feel too close together. Perhaps your darkest shadows should feel closer towards a black hue, especially within that nice arc in side the lab - see my example • I like the guy in the foreground - he can stand out a bit more by enlarging him by maybe 30%. This can help more with bringing in perspective • I played around with the solar system above too. Ignore the amount of planets I have going on but I think my point is to try to spread out the planets and exaggerate the sizes a little bit more since there's a lot more room for them to own that space Hope this helps and good luck! Best, J

Hmmm I definitely see what you’re talking about in terms of planet placement. Yours makes them feel more integrated with the rest of the image as opposed to just a big ol blob of planets. and I see what you mean on the contrast, my original is a little mid tone heavy

Would you opposed to having the figures in motion. They look like they are just standing there. Maybe add one looking through the telescope and one running over. I do not know the back ground to this image and this could contradict the point of the pic. Good luck.

I was thinking of doing another versions with some escaped lab monkeys harassing the Scientists because I thought it’d be funny. I’ll post again with I hope will be a more lively version!
