Hello people, critters and creatures. Just looking for any thoughts or recommendations for scanners specifically for scanning in traditional work (pencil, pen, watercolor etc.). There seems to be a wide range of anything from a few hundred up to over a grand as far as the price range. I've been recommended a pretty good Epson that was on the expensive side, and maybe it is the way to go, but want to get more opinions before I pull the trigger on something in the thousand dollar price range. Bonus would be that it can handle scanning in film negatives as I hope to start developing my own black and white film at some point in the future.
@sable40k
I have some friends who are really into 40k, I've only played a game or two. But I think the oversized shoulder armor, skull decal, etc. definitely says warhammer! You could look up Karl Kopinski for some rad 40k inspiration as well :)

Did someone say Kopinski!!! Just got his book "The Big Kopinski", freaking rad.

It's so hard to pick one. My go to 3 artists for so long were Brian Froud, Alan Lee and Yoshitaka Amano. But over the years so many artists have joined the ranks that they tend to switch in and out depending on what I'm into, my mood, or even just going through that honeymoon phase when a new artist's work speaks to you. James Jean was one of those for me haha. For now though I'll go with one of my favorites, John Bauer 1882 - 1918. An absolutely wonderful illustrator from Sweden who unfortunately passed away all to young with his wife and 3 year old son when the ship they were on capsized.

I think the most common approach or answer would be to learn from artists who's styles you admire by doing some master studies of their work. I believe Stan and Marshal did a video about this, calling them art parents or something. But really, another way of going about it is to just play, experiment, and try new things, even new mediums. You may have a particular medium you want to use, but you may learn something playing with something else you could carry back over into your preferred medium. But you have to give yourself some time to just mess around and push yourself. So I guess my advice is to play and try new things. :)

Hey, Levi! This seems to be the general consensus, so I’m definitely going to be doing everything you’ve mentioned. I think it basically comes down to switching my priorities from spending most of my time working on finishing pieces to show to people, to spending most of it sketching, experimenting, and studying from other artists. Thanks for the helpful advice! 😁

Ish Whatsittoya
Hi everyone! My name's Ish. I'm a dabbler, doodler, and been spinning my wheels in place with art for a handful of years. I love traditional mediums for the most part but have recently branched out into digital. Also have pumped the breaks on "just drawing" and have decided to actually get some form of legitimate education outside of free videos and watching others draw. My final, ultimate, unattainable goal is to do whatever art comes to me on a whim and somehow have that turn into a legitimate income. I also have aspirations for making my own comic (who doesn't?). Its about this past 14 months. I fell ill with a disease after getting hit with COV19 and have been struggling in every facet of life since. Financially, spiritually, artistically....grammatically. What saved my @$$ early on in my struggle is being able to make some money off of pet portrait commissions. Helped pay the bills and gave me purpose. I'm slowly getting better and crawling out of a hole with a brand new love of life and art and want to hit the ground running with it. Here's my stuff. Enjoy it. Or don't. Mwah

Hello fellow dabbler and doodler! :D I to have been spinning some wheels while all the time just sketching away in my sketchbooks for the last 4 or 5 years. I dig what you're doing here, and I really like the gas mask lady justice.

I think the best I could do is give advice, and the best advice I can give to younger artists is to keep a sketchbook and draw everything you can from life. This will help you as much as anything as far as improving your drawing ability, your observation skills, hand eye coordination, your mental library, your imagination.... I can't stress how useful it can be. :)
