I did 10 gesture drawings, 2-minutes for each. I feel like I'm not quite understanding the concept. What are my biggest issues here?
Murali Karri
As I understand it, gesture drawings are for distilling the movement or flow of a pose into its most basic expression, similar to how we do the same for forms and shapes. Then once we have distilled that essence, we build on top again. The exercises help to train your hand and eye to focus only on the most important aspects, and avoid distracting details at this stage. They are great for practicing and experimenting with poses and flow without getting too bogged down in details. That said I too am a beginner, so my understanding may be flawed or incomplete.

Hello all, I couldn't fully complete mine due to IRL stuff (I'm starting a new job on Monday, so I'm out of time :( ), but figured I'd still submit what I did manage of my Cake Bot for you guys to see as my "final submission". I learned a lot and had fun, so I feel that's a personal win even if I couldn't make it to the finish line. I've got a lot to learn about making time for my art (both studies and projects) and fitting it better into my life, so hopefully I can work on that.

Hey Murali, I relate to this alot. Its tough to strike a good work life balance, you need to do you and dont lose who you are. If you dedicate an hour after supper every day or on a Sunday afternoon depending on your job circumstances, then you can still do some drawing. Life happens but you will need to figure out how and when to take a moment in time and make it yours. I have tried pulling an Arther Morgan by walking around with a small sketchbook that I can do random messy sketches when I get time...I have done it with varied success in the back of my work journal (also acts as a good way to practice concepts during a boring meeting). I hope this doesnt sound preachy or anything...it just strikes a cord with me. I like the Cakebot btw...I hope it can also bake and frost a good chocolate or carrot cake!

Hmm. I really want to join this challenge, but the ideas I have are far beyond my skill level...should I just go for it?

Sure, this is the best way to grow: challenge yourself. Out of your comfort zone. And this is a good cause to try finishing something as good as you can. I'm in progress now and I already found idea to participate very useful for my skill level! For example, I have never drew (ro)bots before and never tried making a digital painting complete. As a result I'm really enjoying the process now.

I love Guweiz's art. His light and shadow manipulation is just...*chef kiss* Beyond that though I guess I've not exposed myself to many extant artists, I've been too busy focusing on simple things like...drawing basic forms. Something to rectify in the near future then. Luckily, my fellow artists here have long lists of people to check out. :)

Assuming anyone sees this, I recently decided that I should probably stop hiding my work and put it SOMEWHERE. So I guess here will do. Enjoy the terrible, hopefully it'll make you feel better about your own work. :D
