My attempt at the assignment with the first pear reference. Found keeping the edges of the shadows sharp very against my usual instinct for soft shadows. Tomorrow I'll watch the demo and attempt the other two pear references with whatever I learn and correct from that. Might also try the portrait, havent decided yet.

2nd and 3rd pears, done after watching the Demo and Critique video. Honestly I felt a little lost the more I went on, approaching a drawing in this kind of way is very unnatural to me. Also I didn't do multiple passes on the shading compared to my first drawing to see how smooth of a value I could do it in one go, and I think my lightest value is just too light if I'm going to shade that way, if I do the portrait I think I'll bring it down to a 2H instead of 4H and see if that helps.

I've been drawing on and off since i was a kid, always self-teaching and just flying by the seat of my pants, and never really got any proper instruction, which really bogged down my passion for art by not being able to execute on ideas, or at least not without spending a ridiculous amount of time on it self-correcting mistakes i just don't seem to know how not to make in the first place. I'm 26 now, and feel like I've built a lot of bad habits by never really practicing basic fundamentals, so I'm starting from scratch with this course. Going through my supplies, I picked a cheap A3 sketchbook and I'll probably stick with the Arteza Graphite Pencils, because my fancier stuff doesn't work well on the cheaper paper, and I don't want to be precious about supplies when I'm supposed to just be learning. Starting the pear assignment tomorrow, wish me luck!

I’m in a very similar place as you as well! Good luck with the course :)

I am 63, and have the same story as you do. I just retired from my job and finally now have the time to pursue art. Don’t do what I did - get down to it now, don’t wait any longer 🙂. Can’t wait to see the pictures you will post!
