Assignment

Now that you've seen how I do this exercise, it's time to give it a go yourself! Identify a space you're familiar with and draw it from memory. I would recommend starting with your living room, or somewhere else within your home.

Real room HW. As usual, perspective and angles were tricky for me. Really interesting how hard it is to remember all the details of a room I’ve lived in for 14 years! Feedback please!

Real Room Hw, both the hallway and the den. This was tough and as always any feedback recommended!

My favorite room. Last year, my wife and I moved into our condo. The property came with a basement unit which I converted into a hobby room. It is the first time I have had a dedicated space for art. I did this as a graphite sketch last week on 14ʺX17ʺ. However, I was having difficulty getting that version to look presentable on the computer. The cause may have been a combination of poor lighting and poor camera quality on the part of my cellphone. Eventually, I decided that I would rather just trace over the whole thing with digital pencil on another layer and then discard the photograph. I added some values so that it wouldn't look as out of place next to Gaby's wonderful submissions. I am confident this sketch captures the essential feeling of the space, but comparing it to the actual room, there are indeed proportional errors. Additionally, there are objects and features I altogether forgot existed until I was through with the sketch. Or more commonly, I misremembered the exact shape of the objects I did draw.

Very cool! Especially the LA Woman LP from The Doors! ;)

I thought this was a 3D model at first! So good!

I realise there are a lot of issues in these first 2 attempts (feedback welcome) but can I just say how much this has opened my eyes. I’ve been a professional designer of one sort or another for 10 years now and have relied on photoshop/ references or using visualisers for everything - I’ve never really understood how to get into drawing from imagination. You’ve just opened a massive door for me @stevenzapata and I can’t thank you enough. The way you explain stuff has got me out of my head and made me attempt something i didn’t know I could do. Thank you!

I think these look great! I can see how you would have had prior experience as a professional designer. One aspect I like particularly is the playful variety in the line work: the way some lines are drawn on a straight edge and others freehand, the way some lines overextend beyond their "endpoint" while don't quite reach theirs, and other such idiosyncracies.
