Really good lecture. I went straight to photoshop and started putting some abstract shapes together thinking of a character buuut I caught myself being super stiff, not rhythmic enough, not drawing with that flow that you draw with in the demo @David Colman. So I tried a couple others, thinking more about the narrative and and trying to have that initial flow with the posing. Though a little embarrassing, I wanted to share both of the pages so you can see where I'm at with it and my change from the stiff dead lines to what I hope is more energetic and descriptive.
LESSON NOTES
In this lesson, we learn the importance of shape and form in good character design. We begin with a graphically appealing abstract shape and then delve further into tools and tricks to create compelling form in a piece.

Youre making the right choices by thinking about the shape gesture. Dont just settle for any abstract shape. Let the narrative drive the poses as much as the shape vocabulary. Also clarity- the pose on right although funny doesnt read very well. Additionally although stiff second from left is most appealing because you achieved a visual balance with the features- LArge yes, small nose, medium mouth. You need contrast to find balance

Went and did a couple more using two of the characters I made in the design from life assignment. Trying to tick all the boxes: the flow and rhythm, straight and curve, energy, feeling the pose, narrative, personality, abstract shapes, designing the forms, and grouping the shadows. Poses were imagined, I didn't have ref for them but I got into the poses myself to help me problem solve. I often take photos of myself in the poses but didn't this time cause they seemed to be working. Would also love a critique on them :D Thanks

This weeks drawings. I didnt invent specific exercises this time, what looking back i guess i should have, to be more productive. But i did some drawings following your approach. Starting with the silhouette, keeping it simple. I am exited for the next week, ill try to be more productive again. Any kind of feedback would be very welcome.

Some of this weeks citysketches. Tried to think about the silhouette.

Here are some of my experiments with shapes. Really enjoyed this process a lot. I tried to do a cell shaded version of one of the characters which was an interesting process.
