Assignment

Stage 4: So, what does it mean to finish a painting? Pushing our values to the furthest extreme of contrast that we have planned for. Doing the same thing to the chroma, while maintaining a sense of harmony in the painting. There is also an opportunity to remedy the places where we fell short in the previous layer.

  1. In my paintings process I prefer to not leave finishing as an open ended process. By that I mean that I will plan the amount of layers I intend to paint. For me, if I can’t get it right in 3 layers I find that I am unlikely to get it where it needs to go. This layer count will be different for everyone but I strongly suggest that you choose one for yourself.
  2. Make sure that, at this point you have established your darkest dark and your lightest light. The specular highlights and the deepest crevices of shadow. This way you can ensure that you are able to place all of the other values in the painting with confidence.
