Hello, fellow artists! 👋 I was just working on this portrait in Procreate with the default vine charcoal brush and I’m not sure what else to do for it to feel “finished” so I thought I’d ask. Any obvious issues with it? Any tips on improving at observational drawing/painting? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. 🤓

It is really awesome and I do not think that if you will leave it like this , it will even matter

Stefan Baumann is a really good teacher that i found on YouTube and i think that any body could learn a lot from. his videos. they are great because some times you can just listen wall you are drawing or painting ect & still learn. he also has a great sense of hummer but it can be a little slow at first but give him a chance and he wont disappoint you. ✌😉

Agreed! I’ve watched almost all of his videos already and just watched 2 of the latest ones yesterday. Definitely someone I really look up to! 🤓

It looks nice when it's small scaled. But when I´m looking at it in a bigger skaling, i noticed that you only using soft edges. It looks blurred. Try to use some harder edges.

Ahhh, thank you for pointing that out! I tend to work mostly zoomed out and it does end up looking better that way than when it’s full screened, so I gotta look out for that. I’ll hopefully get some better edge variation in the next one! 😅

Hi Tony! That's nice, I especially like the rendering of the part of the face in the light. Maybe I would add some reflected light on the shadowed jaw, to make that part stand out from the background.

Thanks! Yeah, I think I tried a bit earlier on in the process and got intimidated by trying to put reflected light on a beard so I just darkened it up and hoped for the best. As I was telling Harmony, whenever I deviate from a reference it’s usually because I’m covering up something I’m having difficulty with, but I really need to stop doing that before it becomes a habit, so thanks for the reminder! 👍

Hi Tony :) great portrait I could tell immediately it was Tom Cruise and getting the likeness correct is the hardest part of portraits IMO. His right eye in the light has this slight bulge near the eyebrow which immediately draws attention so it might be worth toning that down. Also the crease under that same eye could be more rounded. That’s it though I think you’ve done a great job 👍

Thank you! I see both of the issues you’re pointing out and agree completely. Part of me wants to stick to the reference to make sure it’s accurate, but I think I need to just be more confident in making changes like these if it would improve the piece so thanks for pointing them out. Usually when I deviate from a reference, it’s because I’m covering up something I’m having trouble with, but in this case it’s to improve it and I need to start doing that more often.

omg Tony! this is freaking insane 😲 Tony bro chill out ok this is my new favorite 😂 i love it how did you do this. like just wow. the only thing that i can see that maybe you should change is his right cheek right above his beard i think maybe blend the dark to be a little bit more bright not a lot just very slightly if you see what i mean if not that's perfectly fine with me i still cant believe that you did this best work yet keep it up you are gonna be one of the grates at this rate. 😄

Thank you! 😁 I see what you mean about his cheek above the beard, so thanks for pointing it out! 👍
