How do you go about planning a painting?

I guess what I’m asking is how do you plan out a painting? Do you look for light source first how do you choose the colors and doesn’t matter if it’s on a tablet or traditional?

I do small thumbnails of just value sketches first, and then I either just start or do color studies - very small paintings to test out different color palettes. That's traditional. I don't do a lot of digital but for digital I definitely omit the color studies since it's so easy to change colors.
Depending on the project, I also make a mood board to decide what style/atmosphere/color scheme I'm going for.
