Hey, @Dennis Yeary! Creating hand-drawn animations is definitely a lot of work - in studios, from what I’ve heard, a team of experienced animators could work for several days to create just a few minutes of an animated movie. Doing all this work on your own sounds like a project that could keep you busy for quite a while. And by having the masterful movies by Studio Ghibli as a reference, you certainly raise the bar to a very high level of artistic quality. I understand how AI can sound like an attractive way to help optimize the workflow of an animation, and talking about it makes me wonder and recall things I’ve heard in AI-related podcasts and posts I’ve listened to and read recently. On one hand, I can’t say I’m not curious to see how an attempt to create an entire animation using AI would turn out. On the other hand, here’s something I can’t help but think about: is it rightful to have an AI create for us an animation in “Studio Ghibli style”? Because, if an AI can mimic the style of that studio, it probably means that it would have been trained using copyrighted material from that studio - but, if that’s the case, was this material ethically acquired? If it’s not clearly disclaimed to have been, how could we, as AI users, possibly know? And if, by any chance, an AI development company might have acted unethically when training their AI, is it correct for us, as artists, to, unawarely or cynically, just take advantage of that? Personally, I strongly believe it’s not. Unfortunately, laws and social norms haven’t yet been able to catch up with the fast paced boom of the technology, and some things regarding creative AI are still quite complicated matters expecting to be more clearly regulated in the future. For now, I stand by what I mentioned in your other AI-related post: having AI at our disposal to create media demands that we, as users and social individuals, try, as much as possible, to understand the small and large scale implications of this tech with a hightened sense of awareness and responsibility. Regardless of the ethical point of the discussion, I imagine that using AI to create an animation makes us perform much less like animators, and much more like the director: someone who acts as the “head” of the project, states the main idea, envisions a result and manages/supervises the process while having an external work force do the actual production work. In the case of a movie director, the work force is the crew of professionals; in the case of an individual such as you or me, the work force would be the AI. These are my current thoughts on using AI to create animations. Not sure if this is helpful for what you were expecting when you brought up this topic, but I think this is sure a relevant subject to be discussed. Feel free to let me know if you have any other thoughts on it!

Yeah it’s hard to get into those studios and some of the horror stories I heard I’m not sure if I want to. I see the ai as a tool to help me stay independent and be able to complete my visions. Honestly artist have been using various tools to help with the process. Like any tool it’s up to the artist to use it properly and not heavily rely on it. When I said ghibli level I meant more for story a fluidity in the animation. I wanted to train a model for own style and taste. Thought i do see said models up for sale in the near future. As artists we need to adapt cause if we don’t we will fall in to the dust and be forgotten. Don’t get me wrong I wish the ai was more focused on other thing like scientific research or creating cures.
