Gesture and Bean Critiques Please?

Hi there! I've been trying to practice gesture drawing and 'the bean' for about 2 months, but not as often as I should during that timeframe. I'm brand-new to drawing people, and I'm struggling a bit. Might just need some sheer mileage! Any advice/ critiques welcome. Also how long would you recommend a beginner stay on these lessons before moving on to the next ones in Proko's figure drawing course?

You are on a right path already though. The thing about the question of how long you should stay in a course, is that it really depends on the actual time you spent on doing the practice the course required. Because it's an online course, not an actual sitting-on-a-class course, people are flexible on how much time they spend on the course each day or each week. And to add another factor is that some people learn faster or slower than others. So there's no clear cut answer to that. But from your work, I see that you're more than ready to go to the next step of the course. The bean practice ends with you being able to draw a proper bean shape with a volume feel to it. If there's some mileage you need to keep you going, it's that to apply that bean practice into an actual figure. Because as I can see from your first and second image, is that you're still struggling to apply the bean thing to an actual figure. Being able to draw beans is one thing, but applying it to an actual figure, is another. Go on to the next course, and keep up the great work!

These are quite nice! I would recommend trying to push your beans further in terms of gesture so you can really feel the twisting, the pulling and the squishing (maybe something that can help with this is drawing a line of action). I would also suggest making your beans “tighter” in a sense. They feel floppy, kinda like they represent something other than the movement of the torso. Something I think could help with this is using more spherical forms and really emphasizing the stretch and squash of the bean. Another thing that can help is drawing Stan’s drawing if the bean from his video(s) to help you get familiar with the bean’s movement (it would also help you get mileage and it gives you the assurance your doing thing properly as you follow along) Otherwise, I really like your gestures, especially how you simplify the hands! And for your question, usually Stan recommends practicing each lesson for a week or two and making sure you understand each concept before moving on. Hope this helps!

Thank you so much, that helps a ton! Especially your comment concerning the beans-- I felt something was off with them, but was having a tough time pinpointing what. Now that you mention it you're definitely right, they are kinda stretched out and floppy. I will try pushing the poses and tightening them up more, then move on to the next lessons. I appreciate it!
