Dog portrait critics

Hello, I made this drawing with graphite pencils on textured moleskin paper. Need some critics on overall aspects: texture, proportions, perspective etc. But biggest question: where you guys find focal point? I was trying to make it on eye.
Arturas, I can see you have sharpened the focus on the near eye and I feel that you have indeed dragged our attention to it. It is hard to know if his proportions are correct, there being so many variations in dogs but it is certainly an attractive image.
Hello Artūras,
I've done a quick overpainting of your amazing portrait drawing to better illustrate my suggestions:
- I fixed a couple of proportional issues within your piece. Compare your original drawing to my overpainting and you will see what I mean:
- The size of the eye you want to focus on in proportion to the rest of the head was a bit too big.
- The snout and the edge of the mouth (which should approx. align vertically with the pupil of the frontal eye) are too far off from the cranium.
- The distance between the eyes was a little bit short for this perspective in my reckoning.
- I think your shading expertise is stunning! Truly great job on that. But I think you could apply details and contrast more sparingly and pull them back where they are not necessarily needed:
- At the moment, there is an even amount of detail level across your whole portrait.
- If you want to put an extra emphasis on the eye as the focal point (which it already is), you could be more suggestive on the neck/ears, distal eye and snout. But on the frontal eye, you can put the most detail and the biggest contrast.
- I've illustrated this point in the attached image with a camera blurr effect and a stronger contrast around the eye. What you can do, is to emulate this camera effect with your pencil work.
But all these suggestions are just minor fixes. Overall, I really love your piece!
Cheers,
Joël
This drawing looks really nice. You did a good job rendering out the feeling of hair, it looks like it has depth and feels 3D, and the proportions look good.
I would like to see some indication of the body of the dog because right now it feels life a floating head.
I think a couple small changes could make the eye a stronger focal point. I don't think you should include the eyelid being half shut. While it may be in the reference, you shouldn't feel obligated to make the drawing exactly like the reference. I would render out the eye completely open without that eyelid and make the inner tear duct cavity dark instead of light to contrast the eyeball and make it feel like its sitting in the socket. If you can create the lightest light on the eyeball with high contrast around it that should help the viewer look there.
Aw, very cute! I think the texture of the fur comes across really well. The structure of the dog's head is great too. Not sure whether it's a photography thing, but some parts of the picture seem a little softer and out of focus. Fantastic drawing though!
Hi Artūras!
Then I look at your drawing my eyes first went to the dogs nose, so the nose was the entry point for me and then my eyes followed the highlighted line in the fur curving to the dogs eye, and the details and emotions of that eye made my gaze linger there. So I would say that for me you really succeeded in making the eye the focal point!
The front eye is really beautiful and shows the feelings and personalty of the dog very well! I think that the eye on the other side of the dogs face, might be sticking out a bit to much in comparison to the angle of the overall head though.
It’s a great drawing and the texture makes me want to be able pet him! Good job!
