3 tone shading exercise

Hi. This is a VERY modest attempt at a 3-toned, 20 minutes shading exercise. The character was invented -- and ha, I'm sure that it shows. I was also working small, about 2x3 inches with a carbon pencil on plain white copy paper. The value plan was kept very simple on purpose since this is a first try :-). Keeping in mind that the light was coming from high and in front of the subject I started by establishing some "butterfly-lighting" style shadow shapes - the darkest tones in the drawing.. Then I added some mid-tone shading working from bottom-to-top and from side-to-side, thinking of the head as a typical "egg" and "cylinder" shape. I left the white of the paper showing on the forehead and nose ridge as the lightest/highlight tones in the drawing. That's it -- 'just a quick, first try at shading a portrait. Certainly can't go anywhere but up from here. Comments and critiques are always welcomed. Cheers!

Great sketch, and I love the storyboard quality it has to me.

heeeey, this is pretty good,I like your value grouping and shapes,if I have to give a critique,is that I think the distance between the eyes is too large, but that may make the character more unique.Anyway good job

Thanks, paper! Yes, you are right -- those eyes are strangely wide. Honestly, I didn't spend more than a few minutes on the lay-in 'cause I was anxious to get to the shading. 'Hope to do better next time :-)
