I think your choices are good but i am not very much knowledgeable in that aspect. One thing i think you should focus on is the fact that you are doing a mistake which most beginning artists do which is to only focus on the face but you don't have to worry that much about it you solve it with a few days practice your arms and other body structures will also start to look good and help elevate the paintings feel and your skills.

Hi Jon and hi everyone, totally excited about this art community thing. I really struggle with color, value and rendering to a specific level. Any advice, Tipp, Tutorial or whatever are totally welcome, please help, kiss kiss and much love!
I think you should apply value before applying paint and you should create contrast between foreground, midground and background when applying value and that will also help you when applying hue, or you can also only keep the contrast between foreground(including the object to focus on or the main character) and the background.
