The graphite degree system was invented by Franz Hardtmuth. When naming the grades, he chose H for Hardtmuth, F for Franz, and B for Budějovice, the city in which the pencil factory is located.
So while the F pencil may seem like an outlier, its name isn't completely arbitrary.

Hey Kyler! 👋 Ol' Franz was a bit self-grandising eh? I can't believe that grading stuck after all these years and has been confusing people for generations! What a jerk! Hahaha

wow, great trivia knowledge there. But honestly now I like it even less. I was told F was for "Fine". But now knowing its for "Franz" it makes even less sense!
It's fine though. I don't really care. I'm exaggerating my hatred for it.

No! Really? I have heard many explanations for F and B and H, but not this one!
Very interesting Wikipedia article for FH . His son was the founder of Kooh-i-Noor. I though they were japanese :D
