Hello, just finished this recently. I feel pretty unsatisfied with the result and since its a digital drawing feels like I cant replicate the chaotic detail feeling of charcoal that Stan used..My feeling is I'm still too afraid when applying shading. Any feedback will be really helpful and appreciated.

Since you're working digital, if you are afraid of shading, you can add a layer with additional shading. If you are happy with it, merge the layers and go on. About your drawing, there is a lot of lining, especially on the chest. Instead of tracing the pectorals, just shade with halftones. Also draw the nipples and genitals, they are part of anatomy, unless your model is maimed. Do not hesitate to compare your measurements with your reference before going into shading, the head can be improved. Keep going !

Hello, I'm recently thinking to advance to learn shading but is on a fence regarding this course: Since I'm mainly a digital artist, does the content of this course, it's concepts and techniques applicable to digital media as well?
Steven Zapata
Absolutely! They're the same concepts I use when I do digital work.

Looking mainly for the landmarks, and on more muscular people I try and add the anatomy but I don't know anatomy at all. Start with gesture so I can still get a more dynamic pose instead of a stiff one. Takes me a bit to actually see what I'm looking for on the body but I try to make every line with intention instead of just chicken scratching. Really want to control my lines. These took me 20 mins total mainly cause I was lost trying to find the landmarks. any tips would be very helpful.

Hi Jonathan, your line quality is definitely good in this assignment! It definitely takes a while to learn to observe where the landmarks are, keep it up! Regarding the scapula, since the person's arms are raising up, you should stretch them more to the side, as the muscles follow the arm movement. Try searching "scapula when arm is raising" on google for reference.

Hello! I'm starting to move into mannequinization, Still having a hard time to not draw the contour as much. Any critique will definitely appreciated!

Hi @ganzaru, nice drawings! Good job with maintaining the gesture. When I first did this exercises I drew the figures too stiff... :) I'll try to look for things to help you further: - I would simplify things more, make the figures more geometrical. With simpler forms you have more control, and mistakes, like the one in your 2nd drawing where the left wrist's perspective contradicts the arm's, can be avoided. When I mannequinize I often do it with the purpouse of learning to draw something from imagination. One of my favorite figure mannequins for that is the one I saw on a youtube thumbnail with Glenn Vilppu and his boxy mannequins on it. It's easy to manage. The level of complexity isn't set in stone, but since the complexity in you drawings caused a mistake, I would bring it down. It can also vary, depending on you're needs. Drawing from imagination usually requires simpler forms, in the beginning stages, but when drawing from photos more complex forms can work even in the beginning. The goal is to draw at a level where you have control of the forms I hope this was helpful :)

Hello everyone! I've recently jump back to re-practice gestures after learning perspective and basic shapes. Being usually a silent learner and rarely interact with the forum, but recently I started to realize that critiques are really important to progress faster. Are there parts that I can improve from? first 2 images : 1 min gesture 3rd & 4th image : 2 min gesture 5th and 6th image : 5 min gesture 7th image : 10 min gesture Also at which point does a person can provide critique as well? I'm curious because there's this saying that giving critique also helps you learn, but most of the time we don't even know whether we are already reliable and good enough with our own works to provide critique..
Jesper Axelsson
Hi @ganzaru, good job! I'm especially impressed with your last one. Longer poses tend to loose fluidity and gesture, because of too much attention to details and less focus on the gesture as a whole. But yours did the opposite! I'll try to look for things to help you further: - In your more recent post (mannequinizations) you mentioned a concern about relying to much on contours. I think reading the critique I gave another student, TobeO, can help you with that and take your gesture drawings to the next level https://www.proko.com/profile/thosakwe/activity (first post) I hope this was helpful :)
