Project - Learning to Sketch from Imagination

what is that !? holly canolly
Submission for the "Sketch from Imagination" project. Learning about it from all the memes in 2024, I chose the animal hyrax. :) Reference photos were simply the first few results from a Google image search.
I explored the animal across several quick sketches, trying to distill its shapes and learn what differentiates a hyrax from animals of a similar build. I made a few character-building attempts that, while decent by themselves, didn't communicate this little critter's lovable, chaotic energy.
Only when I attempted a sketch with its iconic "AWAWA" shouting posture did I find satisfaction in the end result. The final version is a hyrax under the shower, realizing there's no towel nearby and shouting for assistance. Awawa! :))

Yay! I’m glad to have finally caught up to the current project. This was a challenging assignment. I especially struggled with level 2 b. I tried to design a core shadow on the face, hands and robe but it reads more like a dark stripe than a core shadow. Any advice on how to improve that?
i like the sense of volumen created , they feel like two heavy rounded spheres one on top of the other .

For this assignment, I chose to draw a phone charger, primarily because of its straightforward geometric forms—a box, a hexagon, and two cylinders. I also created an orthographic sketch, inspired by Peter Han’s demonstration, to maintain a clear visualization of these shapes.
I opted to draw freehand without using a ruler, which I found both fun and challenging. However, achieving precise accuracy proved difficult, and I’m not entirely sure why. I would greatly appreciate any feedback or suggestions, as I’m eager to improve and create more exact drawings in the future.
Thank you!
i remember getting to europe and struggling because i could charge anything without that type of charger

I've started with my webcam as a way to get the brain to work, I did need some attempts to pull it off, but actually it was really cool to do it, it was interesting and I'm happy with the results, the 2nd one, the pelvis, I thought that was a good chance to refresh bone anatomy and I'm happy with it, I might say it's not 100% accurate but hey I think it really gives the feeling of seeing a pelvis Rotating in space, and the third one was entirely organic, I tried to not be precious with structure and I think it looks good enough to be satisfied with this assignment!

Went the analytical route and followed the process:
1. rough it out
2. clean it up and simplify with a straight edge on tracing paper
3. copy outside contour on tracing paper
4. duplicate outside contour and tweak the insides
I found using my new tools in step 2 difficult. I couldn't decide if I wanted to freehand step 3 or use a ruler, so I did both. I was able to put my outer countour tracing under my sketch page to duplicate it. Then I played around with some inner shapes using pencil before going over it with a micron (my preferred medium). It was hard to decide on line width. I tried to make things that were closer thicker. Hopefully we will spend more time on some of that decision-making.
Ultimately, it was great to study a master then create something of my own—instead of only copying. Time flew by, which must mean time well spent!
