Most of the times I look at the ref then my drawing. But don't worry too much about these things, it will come out naturally as you practice

So far I like my overall design, as far as "odd" goes, but I'm not super happy with the level of detail yet. Thoughts on what to add?
maybe the shadows are too dark ? This kind of rendering works on itself but if you want to add more realistic volume you could try to render the center part like a ball. I think there enough details, but if you want to add some the neck would be a good idea
