Hey there Karl! You've probably been asked this question a gazillion times but I'll take my chances. How do you deal with an art block? Any tips on the same? Absolutely love your work! I'm buying your sketchbook from the little sum I collected doing commissions here and there! Can't wait to get my hands on it!!
Arya Pandey
Thank you so much! I'm so incredibly grateful!! I'll keep everything you said in mind. Have an amazing day!

How did you approach designing Gotham and Gotham girl from your Batman run? How to maintain the originality of a character the way you did?
Arya Pandey
Quick question! Favorite Batman live-action costume and why?
Arya Pandey
Incredible work as always! I had a question. What is it like for an artist to see an iteration of his/her work in live-action? Possibly costume design inspiration? Maybe an entire composition?

Here's a sketch (I plan to ink it) I made to verify my understanding of superhero anatomy, as well as composition. I'd be really grateful if I could get some critique on this, in both those aspects. Thanks in advance!

WOW! What a good stream. Congrats @Stephen Bauman for surviving the first ever Proko 2.0 livestream :)

@Cybernetic Phoenix Stan's already got an app in the works :)

Been thinking about this, glad to know a dedicated Proko app is coming!!

What do you feel about strictly studying from books? I wish to blend both, my observations, as well as the teachings of great artists like Burne Hogarth and so, but oftentimes I can't really pay equal attention to both sides! What are your thoughts on this?

While I was at the Watts Atelier, @Jeffrey Watts used to tell us that drawing from life was like lifting weights, and your personal work was like applying your newly earned strength to a sport. He said that if you only ever play the sport (make art) and never train your body (study) you'll never be able to be a master of your sport. It's the same thing in the other direction, you'll master training but not the sport. A good exercise he told us to do was to do a long study from a book, or piece of art you love, and then put it down and try doing a study from observation but apply the things you learned from your master study. Hope this helps!

I am a book lover, and I have several art books. However, I have always been cautious about learning solely from them. Art after, all is an action. Seeing a master perform an action is far deeper and more immediate than reading a description.

All over the place! I took a different approach on this one, but obviously it didn't pan out. Can I get some critique, anyone? Thanks!

Hi @Arya Pandey. Nice sketch! I like the angularity of your lines, especially in the nose and ear; gives it structure. Stephen just mentioned it in the stream but have you tried squinting at the reference? If you try it you´ll see how similar values blend together. This helps with shading. The darker values form a simple shape that´s easy to copy and helps you map out a clear seperation of light and shadow. Squinting at the reference, you´ll notice that much of the eyes, the bottom of the nose, the side of her face, including the ear, all fall into the shadow group. Of course, this was a quick sketch exercise so maybe you intentionally skipped adding the shadow value under the nose & on the ear, but thought I´d let you know, since having the right major values in the right spot yields a more finished looking result Hope this helps :)
