After a loooong break I finally built up the courage to come back to the course. It is still the most entertaining way of learning how to draw ;) thanks Stan and the whole team! In the first image i tried to cover as many of the reference pictures as i could on one page, and the other image shows my own creations. I try to catch up with the course and the other lessons. And thanks for any helpfull advice. cheers !

*i did the ones on the second picture after Stans advice-video, so its a little bit of cheating there :D

On the left is my last try before Stans video and on the right after his video. The person looks somehow realistic but absolutely not like the guy on the reference picture.. (leftside I used just a HB pencil, and on the right I used 4B 2B and HB, I know see the use of diffrent penciltypes) Looking forward to your next lesson ! Greetings Alex

Hey guys! Your webside is amazing and I really like your videos. You make every minute of it entertaining. Keep up the good work! So I just found my way back to drawing. So I figured I should start again with the gesture course. I would be happy for some productive critique on my drawing attempts from your side. I know I have problems with clean lines.. they are some how messy. But they get better every day ;) Also it’s really hard for me to just keep up the two minutes sketching. I keep drawing over the first lines and then loose the dynamic of the gesture. Sincerely Alex

Hi @Alex G. great start! Nice level of simplicity; you're focused on revealing the action. And good gesture, especially the 5th drawing, with that s-curve going all the way from the torso down to her pointed toe! Keep on practicing these! I'll do my best to help you further: PRACTICE TIPS I attached an image with some practice tips. I think this is the most important advice I can give you at the moment. If you practice a lot and with those tips in mind I think you'll be able to improve fast and find the answers to many of your questions on your own ASYMMETRY - HELPING THE FLOW When you move into doing longer poses where you have time indicate both sides of a leg, you might find the gesture to be hurt. A common issue is to draw symmetrical contours. The symmetry kills the flow. What you want to do is to draw contours that support the flow. Put simply, if the gesture is a c-curve, bend the contour lines to follow that c-curve. You could also think of the gesture as a stream of water that the contour should push forward from side to side. A curve on one side is followed by a curve on the other side. This assymetrical contour pushes the flow forward. LINEQUALITY If you haven't already I really recommend watching this video and applying what it teaches https://www.proko.com/course-lesson/how-to-hold-and-control-your-pencil/assignments Being able to draw long strokes confidently is a great tool for gesture drawing. Another thing that can help with linequlity and cleanliness is to use fewer lines. A good rule of thumb is to try let the first line you put down be the one you use. At first this will give crappy drawings. Don't worry! Accuracy comes with practice :) 30 SECOND POSES - Don't forget to do 30 second poses as well. In fact, here is where I would spend most of my time in the beginning. 30s poses are great, because they force you to only focus on what's essential, plus you get to practice that 4 times instead of just once in 2 minutes. It's a great way to get comfortable with the human figure, the gesture & the proportions, and your pencil. Getting a good grip of the big picture also helps when adding details If you want to really boil it down, you could try this exercise : Do 30 sec quick sketches, using only 5 or less lines (CSI) + head. It´s a challange, but using only 5 lines will force you to find the core gesture. I attached a paintover of another students work that you can use as inspiration. Note that I´m not drawing stick figures, but the flow passing through the forms. But again the practice tips are the most important, especially the part about following along with Stan, since his good habits will become part of your repertoar. I hope this helps :) Keep up the good work!
