What if you don't have access to Photoshop to reduce the value as you did? What else can we use or do to get this contrast?

There's an app called SEEVALUE. you can get 2 3 or 4 values as well as a complete range black and white version of what you're looking at and therefore study a live subject as well!

I used Gimp (free open source) and got a decent result. You can convert to greyscale and posterize with the image and color menus.
