The 8 Minute "Ivan Brunetti" Challenge

Mark as Completed

The Challenge

You'll be using the Zolly App which you can download for free on PC, Android, or any iOS device. Choose a model within the app (or one of free images we've provided in downloads), pick an angle, and do the “Ivan Brunetti” challenge from his book Cartooning: Philosophy and Practice. It’s like this:

Draw your model for 4 minutes, then 2 minutes, 1 minute, 30 seconds, 15 seconds, and 5 seconds.

Those last two get intense!

Medium: Any 2D medium, traditional or digital is allowed. Draw any way you like: with shapes, forms, copying, outlining…The challenge is open to all participants 13 and older.

Deadline

Submit a page of your drawings labeled with the time for each one in the comments below by July 6th in order to be considered for the prize. Marshall will select three entries for a prize.

Join us for our Livestream on July 2 for more information.

Winning criteria will be based on doing the entire exercise within the time allotted for each drawing. Simplicity, clarity, and recognizability are all factors, but if your originality prevails, that counts!

Winners will be announced on July 10th on this page.

WOW. Thank you, I feel honored to be selected, even if I didn't make it to the top 3. I'll keep aiming to be No. 1 in the next challenge. But. How does the Zolly thing works exactly? And would it work if I had the app in multiple devices?
Blondie the good
Yeah i was wondering that too,how do we access the zolly premium pack???

This is a great challenge. I can see the value of it . It pushes you to think of the process and then to think about effectively simplifying the drawing while maintaining an understandable ( not for me) image of it. I've been trying this challenge for sure, but clearly haven't practiced enough. My attempts are beyond terrible, so won't be posting at this stage. It doesn't mean I've given up, but I am behind That said, for me it has highlighted that I need to review previous lessons and practice more ! https://sites.google.com/view/8minutedrawtool/home?authuser=0 I think this tool that Stephen made is better for this challenge.

Yeah I know I'm late but still wanted to throw this in here

Found a great podcast called unpacking peanuts. They chat with Ivan Brunetti. Ivan and the hosts also go through the Peanuts comic strips and talk about the artistry. https://open.spotify.com/episode/6aGnz5905HrJEm9BwRVEhJ?si=qyhwo_9VT1qpSJOi95scdA

had lots of fun doing these, I did a bunch more but these are the ones I liked the most, it was such a fun challenge. It helped me lose the fear of drawing precisely and made everything faster, I'll definitely practice this way from now on 😸 (srr if the images are too small, i couldnt find a better way to attach them 😕)

I thought this would just feel like gesture drawing, but I did not anticipate the impact of an unfamiliar subject. It was a fun challenge to find the balance between being slow and methodical, and being quick and loose. But it was fun!

my GOD I needed this, I've always been very slow and this has helped more than I could've imagined. Thanks for the challenge Marshall and I hope I'm not late.

I kinda love how this exercise forces simplification.

Man, this was a tough as nails challenge. Even more so having not drawn for months. I tried my best, but will make sure I make these far more often now. Loved seeing everyone else's amazing work. So damn inspiring!
@lucastoonz86
A challenge indeed
@lucastoonz86
these where not timed as well but had potential. I actually had to get someone else to time me to keep me on the straight and arrow.

My attempt for this challenge first page is the 4 min and the 2 min second page is the 1 min and 30 sec third page is 15 sec and 5 sec i think the 5 sec was the hardest...

Forgot to set the timer on one of the police cars but here’s my submissions. 2 minutes turns out the best after figuring out what to include during the 4 minutes. The 15 seconds are my favorite, completely unrecognizable except for “thing with wheels ,maybe?”

Not so proud of what I did but I tried my best here, not to mention that this is my first time drawing with time r It's fun and I still think that I need to work on my perspective .

I did this at the last minute after staying awake and watching the whole 24 hrs stream. I planned on doing this with a pen, but I'm kinda messy so I opted for the pencil. that could be a mistake as the marks aren't very clear. Anyway, this was a fun one, but going from 5 second back to four minute messed with my head a few times. I had to try and get back my sense of time by sketching in a separate notebook. I also couldn't figure out the usage of the zolly app in this assignment cause it didn't come with a timer. I only have one laptop, and the app takes up the entire screen when I open it. So I had to use the downloadable models with my laptop's timer. Am I missing something? Cause I can be technologically inept sometimes.
Gilbert Matos
If you're on windows, and win11, there's a timer app that comes with the OS called Clock. There you can setup multiple timers for you to use and have it display on top of everything else. That's what I used. Great work btw!
