Level 1

Using the well-lit photos of arms provided in the downloads section, start with a linear lay-in and then map the core shadows, cast shadows, and contours. Focus on using the proper edge types to make the form feel three-dimensional without any tonal shading.

Level 2

You're going to do the same thing, except the photos I provided you are flat lit. They don't have an obvious separation of light and dark. So, your job is to invent a light source and imagine the edge of that shadow. Make sure you use the right edge. Softer on large round forms, firmer on those thin tendons and bones, and sharp on cast shadows.

Deadline - submit by October 20, 2025 for a chance to be in the critique video!

I did some of the lvl1 photos. Will do some more, was very interesting ^.^ Also tried to figure out the muscles, but i think some of them are definitely off.

Did all of the level 1 models, using F and 3B pencils. Difficult not to go to shading and to stay with just shadow mapping... Any comment or critic is welcome

Done some more level 1 in procreate (with @Melanie Scearce’s suggestion HB pencil which makes it so much easier! Thank you!) and some level 2 arms in my sketchbook. I really hate my level 2 ones - I’m not good at designing shapes but practise makes progress I guess. Will keep at them…

Niceeee looks amazing!

Here is my level 1 assignment. It was pretty long since i last watched the videos in the anatomy course. Now i want to rewatch the video about the triceps muscle .

Hello! This is my submission for the assignment. I started with a simplification of the arm and applied the light to it to get a sense of the shadows wrap in the more complicated arm. Then I did the shadow mapping. Finally, I applied the edges I saw in the picture. I'd appreciate any feedback! Thank you!
Dave Sakamoto
I added too much detail on the first two drawings, so I reigned it in on the others.
Melanie Scearce
Nice work Dave! Overall your shadow maps look great. I wanted to point out this one, I feel that the terminator could be designed with a bit more attention to the foreshortened forms.

Level 2 - the edges were easier to work with as I could now fill in the entire shadow area. So I went back and forth more to adjust the edges and fix them. Of course it was hard to imagine the 3D shape and figure out where the edge goes but I felt more confident when it was ready. With lvl 1 we drew the edges without filling in the shadow area so it was harder to feel if the edge was correct. I guess if I practice more I will get better at imagining the edges without having the shadow areas filled in.

I can see your 3d forms very easily! Well done

Level 1, first attempt (well, kind of - I threw many trials away). Partly traditional, partly digital. I need to practice a lot more for this.
Rachel Dawn Owens
The shape mapping is great. Softer edges around the meatier areas of the arm would make these drawings even more convincing.

I'm not sure I'm doing the assignment correctly--I find it almost impossible to put in the edges without including the shadows and halftones, so I'll wait for the demo before continuing.
Rachel Dawn Owens
Is this a useful demo? Keep it big and simple. Dont overcomplicate things with the midtones yet.
