Now that you’ve all had some time to try the first project on your own, you can watch how I do it and figure out what areas you are exceeding and struggling with. Here is my step-by-step demo on how to properly execute the first project for level 1 students.

Seems like mine got worse, after the demo. I dont know which pencile I should use on procreate to make the shadows :/

You could try flat shapes of value. This will still get the idea across. You can also try just a regular hb basic pencil.

I tried using a picture of my own, so I took a picture of a tangerine with a light focusing on the top left. I am not happy with the end result, but I am unsure on where to improve. My biggest issue was with different colors and different values, between the tangerine and the leafs. I ended up using the same values for adjacent parts with different colors and it confuses me.
Rachel Dawn Owens
Wow! This looks great! This is a very eye catching drawing. If you wanted to separate the values of the leaves from the fruit more, try constraining the values. This concept will come in handy with more advanced subjects down the road too.

Loved this demo!

First try, pear #2! Man, I struggled a lot to get the proportions right, and they're a bit off. Plus I might need a bigger piece of paper next time.
@rafaelrangel
Second try!

Here is my second attempt on pear #1 :)
Rachel Dawn Owens
Perfect!
@nateageek
I think it is clear what was my first attempt. I was kinda trying to do it without the tutorial and what I inferred from the other lessons. Second one was more step by step with the main demo video. Thank you so much Proko! This was fun to see the progress :)
Bennett Jimenez
Tried a different fruit. 😁
@elenakatheryn
Here is my second attempt at the pear after watching the step-by-step. It is pear #2

Attempts 1 thru 5. lol Procreate is hard.
@rafaelrangel
this is my first try after the video, unfortunately I just have Hb, H and 6H, But as soon as I get my art supplies, I will try it again!
@locksmith
My second attempt after seeing the demo. I tried to focus on values more. I think I did a better job this time but I see I need to practice shading more.

I just noticed that the angle of the picture I took of the model is a little different from the actual angle I was seeing it from, but it works for the review. Hope you guys can check it out! (Ignore the drops on the paper, lesson learned)
Rachel Dawn Owens
This is a wonderful simplification of the planes. A pepper is a great thing to study for this.
@rustydoggobytes
a little confused on how to do values with a digital pencil. tried using the hb and 6b as they come default with procreate. i am still a little uncertain how dark to make things. but tis was fun nevertheless!
@matthew_n
Pretty new to drawing in general so go wild!

This was before watching the video. I used an HB pencil throughout, found myself struggling wanting to blend but forced myself not to :’) After watching the demo, I realise I went straight into the darkest value first. Whereas Proko goes for the second darkest, then builds up his darkest. Also I noticed how he simplified the shapes a lot more at the beginning of the drawing. I am open to some constructive critique please. Also do I go again? Or do I move on to the next project?

This is my pear drawing after watching the Dem. I find myself struggling with value, hope to receive some feedback. Thanks a lot
Melanie Scearce
You have a great range of values here, and they all make sense the way you've applied them. I think the more applicable constructive criticism I could give would be regarding your shapes. Try to avoid tangents when you can -- they're areas where two objects, could be lines or shapes, come close to touching or just barely touch. They create tension and can distract the viewer if used unintentionally. Another very minor thing that you could do to reinforce the plane change is to bring that half tone up so it "curves" around the bottom of the pear on the right. These are both very small fixes. I think you have a great drawing here. Is there something specific with your values that you struggled with during this drawing?
