Now that you’ve all had some time to try the first project on your own, you can watch how I do it and figure out what areas you are exceeding and struggling with. Here is my step-by-step demo on how to properly execute the first project for level 1 students.

Hi everyone! Here's the before and after. I think we can clearly see the progression. The first attempt was made before watching the demo. It was way harder than I thought. I still think I messed up the shadow under the pear, but we can see the improvement !

Hello everybody, I hope you’re doing well. I’d like to share with you my two attempts at recreating a pear from a reference photo. The first attempt was made before watching the demo, and the second one after. Thank you!

And here is the pear made with your advice from the video.

First attempts not very conclusive. I find it difficult not to try to go into detail, contenting myself with shadow form. But it's a good exercise for defining what is darker or lighter, I love it.

Thanks for sharing your process. There’s a huge difference in each of your attempts. You’re heading in the right direction.

I'm using procreate as I'm better with traditional media and often hate what I do on my ipad. The first two I drew before watching the demo (white back ground and darker red background). The last one (pinkish background) is what I drew after watching the demonstration. The one with the white back ground, I used the procreate pencil. For the darkest background I used 6B and for the pink background I used gloam. All the brushes came with the program. Edit* I hate what I usually draw on my ipad because I'm trying to draw whats in my head and It just doesnt come out at all. Hence, I'm going back to the basics. Also, there are highlights in the middle pic, I should've went darker with my main light tone. I did these all on one layer.

Well that was harder that I thought🤣

Just starting the course with my daughter (who is a way more experienced artist than I am). First picture is before demonstration. Second pic is clearly after demo video. Third pic is after demo video and with a basic set of six drawing pencils.

The lights got darker when I put the shadow tone behind it… I brought out the highlight and I suppose I could’ve brought out the light mid-tones back but let’s carry on because as Stan said, it’s not supposed to be a good rendering just yet. But I do see where it went darker when I layered in the background.

I'm returning to the course after a break and I wanted to start fresh! I noticed with the first pear I may not have simplified the values enough, so I tried again, trying to keep everything sharper.

Made some revisions based on the Critique video! I darkened all the tones to make the highlight stand out better. I think the values are closer to the ones in the Demo now.
